Dear Commissioner,

We need your help. If we are ever going to turn the corner on the affordable housing shortage, it is going to take a significant city investment. Under City Manager Tom Markus’ current plan, it would take 60 more years to meet the need for affordable housing in Lawrence. This is not a solution.

There is an abundance of tax payer dollars in the Capital Improvement Plan ($327 million over the next five years) and we want to see $15 million of that invested in making Lawrence a city where all people, regardless of income, can afford to live, starting next year with $1.5 million.

I would like to see affordable housing initiatives given priority in the city’s Capital Improvement Plan because I know that an increase in the inventory of affordable housing would:
•Create jobs. Investing in the development of affordable housing creates a significant number of construction-related jobs, and new residents support additional jobs in other sectors going forward.
•Attract both employers and employees. Combined with strong public schools and high quality of life, a broad affordable housing inventory has proven to attract employers to a region.
•Reduce homelessness. Forty percent of the homeless population living at the Lawrence Community Shelter and elsewhere are currently working but cannot afford decent rental housing.
•Provide a road to safety and stability for vulnerable members of our city. (For example, women fleeing domestic violence, those with mental illness seeking recovery, and ex-addicts.)
