Affordable Housing Pledge

Right now, Douglas County has the second biggest shortage of affordable housing in Kansas. One in five residents lives in a severe affordability crisis. To meet existing housing needs, Lawrence needs 1,690 affordable homes for purchase (under $130,000), and 2,347 affordable homes for rent (under $700).

This November, a .05% (1/20th of a penny per dollar spent) sales tax is up for renewal and rededication to affordable housing in Lawrence. If approved by voters, this sales tax dedication would generate $1 million per year for ten years – estimated to be enough to end the affordable housing shortage within 15 years.

We estimate that we need 7,000 “yes” votes on this issue in order for it to pass. Pledge your support for affordable housing in our city by signing the pledge below.
